Hotel Newport
Hotel Newport is friendly and intimate with a personal touch reflecting its traditional setting. On arrival at the hotel, their friendly and attentive team will greet you and endeavour to ensure that your stay will be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
The Seven Arches Viaduct is a beautiful historic landmark and signals your arrival at Newport, a quaint and picturesque port village, surrounded by the majestic Nephin Mountains, just 20 minutes from Castlebar, 15 minutes from Westport, and an ideal stop before Achill. The village and hotel retains its traditional identity while offering modern home comforts and a full range of country and coastal activities.
Newport is the perfect base for those wishing to explore the most scenic locations on the west coast of Ireland, and is located less than 1km from 'The Great Western Greenway’ The longest off-road cycling/walking route in the country, passing through some of the most idyllic scenery in the West of Ireland.
The Great Western Greenway
Escape the bustle of urban life on the Great Western Greenway, the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland. Meandering along the old Newport / Mulranny railway, this 18km traffic-free route is ideal for getting out on a bike for a spin or stretching your legs. The Newport / Mulranny railway once formed part of the famous Westport / Achill Railway which closed in 1937.The eagerly awaited Greenway extension opens in June 2011 lenghtening the existing route to 42km, all off-road, from Westport to Achill Island.
Travelling this greenway, you’ll be surrounded by idyllic countryside. This is a chance to drink in the view of the spectacular Nephin Mountains and across Clew Bay to Croagh Patrick. You could even stop off for a hike on the Lettermaghera Loop walk.
Or if you’re a history buff you can visit fascinating gems like the seven-arch bridge over the Black Oak and Bunnahoona rivers, Grace O'Malley's Rockfleet Castle and a 15th century Dominican Abbey.
And the WINNER is …………………….
At the end of the poems.
First we’d like to thank everyone that participated in this poetry contest some were lyrical, some satirical, some made us hysterical but we’re glad to see none were cynical, it’s a miracle !

When we said we would have a number of water activities on show we definitely weren’t messing around! For your viewing and exploration pleasure we will have the impressive L.E. Niamh naval ship on site.
L.E. Niamh was built in Appledore Shipyard in the UK for the Naval Service. She is an improved version of her sister ship, L.E. Roisin. She is built to the successful Róisín design that optimizes her patrol performance in Irish waters (which are among the roughest in the world), year round. For that reason a greater length overall (78.8m) was chosen, giving her a long sleek appearance. This massive ship will be docked at Sir John Roberson’s Quay where you will have the opportunity to climb onboard and discover the history and excitement of her many treacherous voyages.
The Mayo Association Dublin, Admiral Brown Society and Aaddergoole Titanic Society are pleased to co-host a public celebration onboard the visiting Irish Navy Vessel, LE Niamh.
